Kiwanis Kicks off Campaign for Shade on Hot Playground

The Kiwanis Club of Stuart is fast-tracking fundraising efforts to build a shade structure at Kiwanis Park before the summer

Stuart, FL. – The Kiwanis Club of Stuart is launching a campaign to raise $30,000 to build a shade structure to protect the playground equipment for kids at Kiwanis Park. The park is a popular meeting location for mom groups, play dates and birthday celebrations.  However, children can’t always use the park’s amenities when the equipment gets too hot under the Florida sun.

The campaign is kicking off using Go Fund Me and a Facebook page with the goal of raising money so that construction can begin before the height of summer. The City of Stuart has agreed to match the $30,000 to fund the purchase and construction of the shade structure.

“We’re really stepping up and trying to get this built quickly in time for the summer. Parents love to take their kids to this beautiful park, but the hot Florida sun beats down on the equipment and they can’t use it,” said Barbara Essenwine, past president of the club. “We’ve seen children come to the park and leave crying because it’s too hot to play on. We need to change that.”

Over the past 30 years, the Kiwanis Club of Stuart has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of time in the development of the park. The park includes the only barrier free playground on the Treasure Coast – allowing children with and without disabilities to play side by side.

Construction is expected to take six weeks.
